Yuki Cross is the central female character of Vampire Knight and in the beginning of this manga and anime series she is a 16 year old student at Cross Academy where her adoptive father, Kaien Cross, is headmaster. As a very young child she was attacked by a vampire but saved by another more powerful pureblood vampire named Kaname Kuran. Ten years later, Yuki is a school guardian at Cross Academy where she helps to protect the human students in the Day Class from the vampire students in the Night Class. At Cross Academy, the administration is searching for ways that humans and vampires can live together in peace.
During the series, Yuki discovers that one of her friends, Zero Kiriyu, has been bitten by a pureblood vampire. Upon finding this out Yuki struggles to help Zero deal with his new state of being and the instability that affects all who are bitten. Zero loathes the fact that he is now a vampire and fears that he will degenerate into an evil vampire bent on murder. To prevent this miserable outcome, Zero feels that the only option is to kill himself. Yuki is determined to prevent Zero from taking his own life yet is also distracted by her love for the vampire who saved her so many years ago, Kaname Kuran.
Shizuka Hio is the pureblood vampire who killed Zero’s family and turned him into a vampire. Since Zero can avoid the descent into madness by drinking the blood of the vampire who bit him, Shizuka offers her blood to Zero if Yuki will agree to be bitten by Shizuka or by killing Kaname. Yuki decides to give up her humanity and save both Zero and Kaname. She is stopped by Zero, who would rather take his revenge and kill Shizuka. However, to protect Yuki, Kaname actually kills Shizuka.
