The series centers on the life of Hideki Motosuwa. He is a help back student trying to get into a university. He dreams of having a girlfriend and owning a persocom. A persocom is an android used as a personal computer, which is very expensive. One day when walking home, Hideki finds a persocom lying in a pile of trash. The persocom is in the shape of a beautiful girl. He turns her on and the persocom can only say one word, which is chi. That is how the persocom eventually gets her name. Hideki thinks naturally that there is something wrong with her so he bring Chi to a couple friends. Their persocoms try to scan her but both their persocoms crashed trying to do so. They come to a conclusion that Hideki’s persocom might be one of the Chobits, a legendary series of persocoms rumoured to have free will and emotions. They also come to a conclusion that the persocom must be a custom built one because the physical features does not resemble any persocom model in any available database. On top of work and school, Hideki attemps to teach Chi words, concepts and appropriate behaviours. Chi starts to develop feelings for Hideki at an emotional depth that she is not supposed to posses. Hideki feels differently because he needs to figure out some of her mysteries but eventually starts having feelings. Chi is trying to find what her purpose is and she is doing that by exploring the world with her sister.
